I had the fortunate opportunity to meet my girlfriend’s nephew, Blake, not long after we started dating. Meeting him truly opened my eyes and "ears" to the experiences of children born hearing impaired. For many parents, receiving this diagnosis can be overwhelming, often leaving them feeling scared and uncertain about their child’s future.

Fortunately for Blake, his parents took immediate action. They dedicated themselves to researching every available option, determined to use modern science to help their son experience a life full of sound.

In 1990 the FDA approved Cochlear Implants in children and Blake received his surgical implant when he was 15 month old and then a follow up surgery at 21 months. From that moment on, he never looked back. He currently excels in academics in college & is an active member of his fraternity, proving that hearing loss does not define a child's potential.

While most insurance plans cover the initial surgery and devices, they typically do not cover replacement parts which are an essential aspect of keeping this technology functioning effectively. That’s why I stand behind the Cochlear Implant Awareness Foundation (CIAF). Over the past nine years, CIAF has provided more than $7 million in support, helping over 1,800 families gain access to this life-changing technology.

Blake’s story is just one example of how cochlear implants can transform lives, and I am proud to support a foundation that ensures more children like him have the same opportunity.
